Short answer, Bees. And the Planet.
Happy flowers = Happy Pollinators! Small farms are working really hard to build healthy biomes for their crops and this happens through sustainable practices and keeping the ecosystem healthy. This encourages biodiversity and the pollination of nearby crops. In other words, we love the bees. We can't live without them! It's because of the bees that we have beautiful flowers, tasty veggies and wonderful fruit. Party on bees!!!
Quality! Flowers bought locally can last up to two weeks! Here on the farm, we pick straight from the field and these beauties land in your hands and on your table within 24-36 hours. Therefore you are getting them at the beginning of their bloom life instead of at the end after traveling half way across the world! Also, here at White Cottage, we grow organically. Meaning, we do not use chemicals on our flowers to grow them. Our farm is irrigated from a spring underground. We don't want to have chemicals seeping into the ground that might end up in anyone's drinking water! Plus, it's just the right thing to do.
You're supporting the community! As a small farm, we are proud to be growing for you. It's long days, lots of sunscreen, sore backs and lots of frozen dinners. But we do it because of the beauty, and the happiness it brings when we deliver to you. We love playing a small part in you making someone's day by giving flowers to them. Your support is what helps us stay in business!
We love our planet! OK, so I'm going to get in the weeds a little bit here......... did you know that Columbia alone ships more than 4 billion flowers to the US? For example: In the 3 weeks leading up to Valentines Day, 30 cargo jets make the trip daily from Columbia to Miami. It is estimated that those three weeks alone equates to 114 million liters of fuel burned, and 360,000 metric tons of CO2 emitted. That's not even counting the next leg of the trip, getting those flowers transported to their next destination.
Small farms work to build healthy environments, delivering from the field to the consumer. So the next time you purchase flowers, think of the carbon footprint, and consider buying from your local grower. You are participating in making this a healthier planet. Every little bit we can do is important!
